What is Pound For Pound?

Pound For Pound is a fitness competition created by UNIT 22 Northampton when we recognised that relative strength to weight ratios were not considered in CrossFit or functional fitness competitions with the “Rx” standard. However, in Weightlifting and Powerlifting competitions they are considered and athletes are categorised according to their bodyweight as it seems logical that, in general a heavier athlete will be able to move more weight than a lighter athlete.

Therefore, we came up with the idea of Pound For Pound, where each athlete lifts a percentage of their bodyweight rather than a set weight. This way, all of the athletes in the competition are working at an intensity that is relative to their bodyweight, but without having the need for weight classes.

What’s involved?

Each athlete must weigh themselves before each online qualifier workout, of which there are three. That weight is then used to calculate the weight used on the barbell, with the percentage being set by us.

For example, if the workout was:

Thrusters – 60% bodyweight for males & 50% bodyweight for females

Pull Ups

An 80kg male athlete would have to use 48kg for the Thrusters and a 60kg female athlete would have to use 30kg for the Thrusters.

Obviously, for gymnastics movements the athletes are moving their bodyweight which is relative to them.

Pound For Pound 2018 qualifiers are released on Monday 7th, 14th & 21st of May 2018. The top 144 athletes (72 Rx men, 48 Rx women, 12 masters men & 12 masters women) will progress to the finals on the 4th & 5th of August 2018.

The event will begin with the first workouts on Saturday and Sunday starting at 9am and is due to finish at 5pm on Saturday evening. The Finals will be at 2pm followed by prize-giving on the Sunday afternoon.

There will be 3 workouts on the Saturday, then 1 more workout on the Sunday morning before a cut is made for the top 12 athletes to progress to the semi-finals and then the top 5 athletes will progress to the finals following that.
